Private OCD Treatment at Home
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition where individuals have persistent, intrusive thoughts or obsessions that can be extremely troubling. These can include harming people, a fear of contamination or disturbing images. It is a serious condition and can have a detrimental impact on a person’s life.
An individual with OCD will try to eliminate these obsessions by carrying out ritual-like behaviours (compulsions). They believe that if they do not carry out these behaviours, the obsessive thoughts will happen. Examples of compulsions include:
- Excessive hand washing
- Checking and rechecking things, such as the oven or door lock
- Counting objects
OCD can be extremely distressing, as the compulsions usually result in obsessions returning, often stronger than they initially were. It can impact on a person’s everyday life.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can co-occur with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). This is thought to be because both conditions share many of the same underlying causes.

Causes of OCD
Most people, at some point will have strange and unexpected thoughts, but certain individuals who are predisposed to developing OCD may experience intense, worrying and uncontrollable thoughts. They will also experience these thoughts for an excessive period throughout the day.
Although medical professionals are uncertain why specific people develop obsessive compulsive disorder, research has found that it is more common in women than in men, and symptoms generally develop in late teenage years or before the age of twenty five.
Causes can be broken down into three areas:
Biological
Biological factors such as a genetic disposition, i.e., they may have inherited specific genes from a close relative is a common explanation for the onset of OCD.
Low serotonin levels have also been associated with triggering obsessive compulsive disorder, although this can be managed with antidepressants (SSRIs).
Brain abnormalities are also considered to be triggers for developing obsessive compulsive disorder, along with streptococcal infections in children. This is commonly known as paediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder (PANDAS).
Environmental
Learned behaviour, excessive responsibility, perfectionism, and role models with obsessive compulsive tendences are considered factors in the onset of OCD. Others include a strict moral and religious upbringing which is excessively instilled in a child.
Psychological
Early traumatic experiences, stressful events or dysfunctional beliefs are seen as contributing factors in the development of OCD. These can include:
- Abuse (physical or sexual)
- Neglect
- Bullying
- Separation
- Overprotection
- High levels of guilt

How Does OCD Treatment at Home Work with Orchestrate Health?
Therapy
We offer a range of different therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help you understand the root cause of your obsessive compulsive disorder, alter disruptive or harmful thinking patterns and compulsive behaviours, and create healthy coping strategies. Your therapist will help you engage with your fears without unhelpful coping strategies, and work through your thoughts and fears gradually.
You will have access to a dedicated therapist who you will build a deeply trusting relationship with as you explore your condition and move towards your recovery journey. You will gain greater understanding of your inner workings and will be able to identify when you might be slipping into unhelpful patterns.
Medications
Some people with obsessive compulsive disorder benefit from medication alongside therapeutic treatment. The main type of medication used are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which help increase the levels of serotonin in your brain.
These medicines can take some time to begin working. During this period, we will check on your progress to make sure your treatment is as effective as possible, and we can adjust our prescribing accordingly.
Live-in Support
In extreme cases, OCD can make everyday tasks seem impossible. To help you get back to the life you deserve, we can arrange in-home support such as:
- Live in Mental Health Nursing (RMN)
- Visiting Mental Health Nurse
- Occupational Health
- Therapeutic Support workers
- Recovery Coaches – mental health coaches who can provide psychosocial support as well as life coaching.
