Psychosis Treatment at Home
Psychosis is a medical term used to describe a condition that affects the way the brain processes information. Often described as a ‘break from reality’, people experiencing psychosis perceive things differently from what is really happening, such as seeing, hearing, or believing things that are not real. Psychosis itself is not a mental illness, but symptoms of a physical or mental health disorder.
Orchestrate Health is pleased to provide private psychosis treatment at home, allowing our patients to receive the finest care from the comfort of their own surroundings.
As we provide a private pay service, Orchestrate Health works outside of the NHS. We are committed to ensuring patients receive the highest standards of care available.
Causes of Psychosis
Psychosis can be very frightening for the person experiencing it. Psychosis is more common than people realise, but many choose not to discuss it because of the stigma surrounding it. Most people who receive treatment go on to lead healthy, productive lives.
It is unknown exactly what triggers psychosis, but there are several risk factors that can come into play. These include:
Physical
Certain physical conditions can trigger psychosis, including:
- Stroke
- A traumatic brain injury
- Parkinson’s disease
- A brain tumour
- Dementia
- Alzheimer’s disease
Psychological
Several mental health disorders can trigger psychosis. These include:
- Schizophrenia
- Bipolar disorder
- Depression
Drug and Alcohol Misuse
Alcohol abuse and certain drugs can heighten the risk of psychosis.
Environmental
Traumatic events or personal experiences can also increase the risk of developing psychosis. These include:
- Sexual assault
- The death of a loved one
- A stressful event such as a terrorist attack or war
Symptoms of Psychosis
There are two main symptoms of psychosis – delusions and hallucinations.
Delusions are beliefs that are false, and appear irrational to others. Typical delusions include:
- Believing you are on a special mission, have special powers, or in some cases that you are a god
- Feelings of being followed or watched
- Believing there is a conspiracy to harm you
- Outside forces are in control of your actions and feelings
Hallucinations are sensory perceptions that are not reality. Typical hallucinations include:
- Hearing voices when there is nobody there
- Feelings or sensations you cannot explain
- Seeing people or things (such as shapes) that are not there
- Smelling things that other people cannot
People can also experience a change in emotions, often showing less feeling to those around them. A change in behaviour is also common, with some becoming extremely active, whilst others find it difficult to find the energy to do everyday activities such as seeing friends and family. Others may become easily confused, finding it hard to put sentences together, follow a conversation, or find things difficult to understand and remember.
Psychosis can affect people differently, and not all symptoms will be present at any given time. As there are several causes of psychosis, symptoms can change alongside them.
