What ADHD is – and what it isn’t

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, impulse control, and emotional regulation. It is not a sign of laziness, lack of intelligence, or a character flaw. Instead, it arises from differences in how the brain processes information; often making everyday tasks like time management, organisation, and task completion particularly challenging. ADHD affects both children and adults, with symptoms sometimes only becoming apparent later in life.

ADHD is frequently misunderstood. It’s not simply about being ‘hyperactive’ or ‘distracted.’ It’s a complex condition that presents differently in each person, with three subtypes: inattentive,hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. Effective ADHD treatment requires personalised care that addresses specific challenges and strengths experienced by each individual, empowering them to thrive.

Catagorising Adult ADHD

ADHD is categorised into three distinct types: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined type. Each type presents unique symptoms and challenges

Predominantly inattentive type

This type of ADHD is often less noticeable as others, but can come with just as significant challenges. Individuals with predominantly inattentive ADHD may struggle to focus, organise tasks, or follow through on commitments. They are often easily distracted, forgetful, and prone to making careless mistakes.

Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive

Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD is more overtly noticeable. People with this type often feel an inner restlessness, finding it difficult to stay still, remain quiet, or wait their turn in conversations or activities. They may frequently interrupt, fidget, or act impulsively without considering consequences.

Combined type

The combined type of ADHD is the most common and includes a mix of symptoms from both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive categories. Individuals with combined ADHD may struggle with focus and organisation, while also exhibiting impulsive behaviours and restlessness. For example, they may find it challenging to complete detailed tasks while simultaneously feeling an urgent need to act or speak without restraint.

What causes ADHD?

The interaction of genetic, neurological, & environmental factors

The exact cause of ADHD remains uncertain, but it is widely believed to result from a combination of genetic predispositions, brain structure and function differences, and environmental influences.

Research shows that ADHD often runs in families, suggesting a strong hereditary component. Equally, neurological studies indicate that individuals with ADHD may have imbalances in brain chemicals like dopamine, affecting focus, attention, and impulse control.

Environmental factors may also play a role. Premature birth, low birth weight, and prenatal exposure to alcohol, tobacco, or drugs have been linked to an increased risk of developing ADHD. Other potential contributors include early exposure to stress or trauma and significant disruptions during critical stages of brain development.

Symptoms of ADHD in adults

ADHD in adults often presents differently than in children, with symptoms impacting daily life, work, and relationships. Understanding these symptoms can lead to earlier recognition and effective treatment.

Common symptoms of adult ADHD include:

These symptoms can significantly interfere with daily functioning and are often misunderstood as ‘laziness’ or ‘disinterest’. It’s essential to recognise that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, not a lack of willpower.

Tailored treatment plans combining medication, therapy, and coaching can help manage these symptoms, empowering individuals to thrive in their personal and professional lives.fers the option of family-therapy to help strengthen your support network and pave the way for your long-term recovery.

How at-home ADHD treatment works

At-home ADHD treatment offers a curated approach, allowing individuals to receive expert care in a familiar and comfortable environment. By combining medication, therapeutic support, and family involvement, treatment is designed to address the multifaceted challenges of ADHD.

Medication

For many, medication remains a cornerstone of ADHD treatment – particularly stimulant medications, which regulate brain activity to improve focus and impulse control. These medications are generally well-tolerated, with minimal side effects.

At Orchestrate Health, our psychiatric professionals work closely with you, regularly monitoring your response and adjusting dosages if necessary. This ensures that the medication remains effective and aligned with your goals; offering long-term symptom management in a safe, supportive manner.

Therapeutic support

Therapy plays a vital role in managing ADHD, often complementing medication or serving as a standalone treatment.

Our team provides access to therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps address negative thought patterns and enhance skills like task management.

In addition to talking therapies, clients benefit from support like occupational health guidance, therapeutic support workers, and recovery coaches who provide life coaching and psychosocial support. This comprehensive approach equips individuals with practical tools to manage ADHD effectively.

Family support

ADHD often affects not just an individual but also their family and support network. Misunderstandings about the condition can lead to strained relationships or feelings of frustration.

Our family therapy sessions foster understanding, helping loved ones learn about ADHD and its impact. Strengthening these connections builds a robust support system, paving the way for improved communication, empathy, and a healthier, more harmonious environment for long-term recovery.

Where we fit in the Stepped Care model

Orchestrate Health bridges the gap between steps 2 and 4 of the Stepped Care model, providing personalised, at-home ADHD treatment tailored to meet individual needs. Our approach aligns with the model’s core principle: delivering the right level of care at the right time.

For patients who require more than low-intensity interventions like self-help or brief therapy (Step 1) but do not yet need specialist crisis care (Step 5), we provide a vital mid-level solution. Whether through therapeutic support, medication management, or a combination of approaches, we offer flexible, responsive care.

Working within the model ensures regular monitoring, ongoing adjustments, and clear feedback – empowering patients to progress confidently through their treatment journey without disruption to their daily lives.
