Causes of OCD

Most people, at some point, will likely experience strange and unexpected thoughts. But, certain individuals who are predisposed to developing OCD may experience intense, sometimes worrying and uncontrollable thoughts. They will also experience these thoughts for an excessive period throughout the day.

Although medical professionals are uncertain why specific people develop obsessive compulsive disorder, research has found that it is more common in women than in men, and symptoms generally develop in late teenage years or before the age of twenty five.
Causes can be broken down into three areas:

OCD often has a biological basis. Genetic predisposition plays a key role, with individuals inheriting specific genes linked to the disorder. Low serotonin levels and abnormalities in brain function – especially in areas controlling fear and decision-making – are also associated with OCD. In some children, streptococcal infections can trigger a specific form known as PANDAS, further highlighting the condition’s biological complexity.
OCD can be shaped by learned behaviours, stress, and upbringing. Growing up in a highly controlled environment or having role models with obsessive tendencies may increase susceptibility. Major life stressors, such as personal loss or significant change, can also trigger or worsen symptoms, reinforcing compulsive behaviours over time.
Emotional experiences often contribute to OCD. Trauma, bullying, neglect, or overprotection in childhood can heighten vulnerability. Additionally, dysfunctional beliefs – such as excessive guilt or a heightened sense of responsibility – can intensify obsessive thoughts and compulsions. Addressing these patterns through therapy is key to breaking the cycle of OCD.

How Does OCD Treatment At Home Work with Orchestrate Health?

Therapy is central to overcoming OCD, helping individuals understand and break the cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) are used to challenge distressing thoughts and develop healthier coping strategies. One-to-one therapy fosters a supportive relationship with a specialist, creating a safe space for long-term recovery.
For many individuals, medication plays a key role in OCD management. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed to help regulate serotonin levels, reducing obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. Orchestrate Health’s specialists closely monitor medication plans, ensuring each treatment is tailored to the individual’s needs for optimal results.

For severe OCD, live-in mental health support provides round-the-clock care within the comfort of home. Orchestrate Health offers:
