PTSD Treatment at Home

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD as it is commonly known, is a mental health disorder causing extreme distress and disruption to an individual’s daily life. It is typically caused by exposure to a traumatic or stressful event and can develop immediately, or even weeks, months or years later. Although very similar in symptoms to that of Acute Stress Disorder, PTSD usually lasts for a longer period.

Causes of PTSD

Typical causes of PTSD include:

Symptoms of PTSD

Symptoms can vary, and they are rarely the same for everyone; however, there are three types of PTSD symptoms which fall into the following categories:

Re-experiencing

This is the most common symptom of PTSD where something you feel, or experience reminds you of the trauma you experienced. This can include:

It is common for the individual to have constant negative thoughts, often asking themselves why the event happened and whether they could have done anything differently. This type of thinking often leads to feelings of shame or guilt and hinders them in coming to terms with the event.

Avoidance

This type of symptom of PTSD – also referred to emotional numbness, means the individual will try to avoid people or certain situations that trigger thoughts of the event, e.g., if they were in a car accident, they might avoid driving, or keeping busy to avoid thinking about the past event.

Hyperarousal (feeling ‘on edge’)

Anxiety is a typical symptom of PTSD, and most people will feel anxious or on edge if they are reminded of the traumatic event. Individuals can be easily started and constantly aware of threats. This can lead to:

In addition to the above three categories, individuals can also experience cognitive mood disorders which are negative changes in feelings and beliefs. These include:

Stepped Care – The Way Forward for Home Adult PTSD Treatment

You should not have to worry about PTSD getting in the way of your life.

We operate within the Stepped Care model, ensuring that you only get the level of care you need – we do not believe in a one-size fits all approach.

Your care with us could range from medication and a monthly check-in to see how you are doing or daily support from one of our therapists – it is entirely up to what you need. We can taper our support up and down according to your needs at the time.

How Does PTSD Treatment Work?

Medication

PTSD may be treated with certain medications. These usually have minimal side-effects, but our team will check in with you regularly to see how you are responding. You can continue with medication for as long as you feel that it is helping you.

Therapeutic Support

Often, therapeutic interventions for PTSD are just as effective as medication. Understanding the condition and how it works can help you manage it. Our expert team can help you with changing your repetitive thought patterns. You’ll have access to:

You will have access to PTSD-specific talking-based therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) which can help you change your negative thought patterns, develop healthy, realistic goals, and help your task management.

Family Support

PTSD symptoms can also cause arguments and rifts within families if people don’t understand the condition. Orchestrate Health offers the option of family-therapy to help strengthen your support network and pave the way for your long-term recovery.
