Why OCD and BDD Co-Occur and the Implications for Treatment

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are two mental health conditions often seen together. Studies have shown that up to 78% of people with BDD also have OCD, and up to 12% of people with Obssessive Compulsive Disorder also have Body Dysmorphic Disorder

There are several reasons why OCD and BDD might co-occur. One possibility is that they share some of the same underlying causes. For example, both disorders are thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Additionally, both disorders involve intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours.

Another possibility is that Obssessive Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic Disorder can feed off of each other. For example, someone with BDD might engage in compulsive behaviours, such as mirror-checking, in an attempt to reduce their anxiety about their appearance. However, these behaviours can make the anxiety worse in the long run. Similarly, someone with OCD might have intrusive thoughts about their appearance, which can then lead to BDD symptoms.

Finally, it is also possible that Obssessive Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic Disorder are simply two different ways of expressing the same underlying problem. For example, someone with OCD might have intrusive thoughts about their appearance but might not be aware of the connection between these thoughts and their BDD symptoms.

Regardless of the reason, the co-occurrence of OCD and BDD can make it difficult to treat both disorders. This is because the treatments for OCD and BDD are often different. For example, Obssessive Compulsive Disorder is often treated with medication or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), while Body Dysmorphic Disorder is often treated with CBT alone.

Treatment Implications

BDD and OCD treatment can be challenging, but it is important to seek help if you are struggling with either disorder. Many effective treatments are available, and the right treatment for you will depend on your needs and preferences.

If you have Obssessive Compulsive Disorder, your doctor or therapist may recommend medication, CBT, or a combination. Medication can help reduce the intensity of your intrusive thoughts and compulsions, while CBT can help you change how you think about your disorder and learn to manage your symptoms.

If you have Body Dysmorphic Disorder, your doctor or therapist may recommend CBT alone. CBT can help you to challenge your negative thoughts about your appearance, develop a more realistic body image, and learn to cope with your anxiety.

In addition to traditional therapy, some online resources and support groups are available for people with OCD and BDD. These resources can provide additional information and support as you work through your treatment.
